There is plenty to do in Gieten and the surrounding countryside. The extensive wooded environment, including the 'Zwanemeer' woods, an area with sand drifts and many interesting features, is much loved by walkers. The well-known recreation lake, ''t Nije Hemelriek' ('new kingdom of heaven') means fun for the whole family. Exploring the environment by bicycle A network of asphalt cycle tracks guarantees maximum cycling pleasure, taking you to the most beautiful spots in the surroundings. You can also follow the renowned 'Hondsrug route' (the historic route over the natural sandy ridges). There are also plenty of facilities, in the Zwanemeer among others, for those who enjoy the quiet pastime of fishing.
